About Today Readings

St John of Kenty

Malachi 3:1-4, 23-24. Lift up your heads and see; your redemption is near at hand – Psalm 24(25):4-5, 8-9, 10, 14. Luke 1:57-66.

His name is John

Julia: There’s lots not to like in this story, Jesus. John being made dumb for doing due diligence, for one thing. And all the fuss about naming. The priests decide, ignore the mother’s wish, and ask Zechariah. Why did it matter?

Jesus: Well, Julie, names matter because people matter. God calls all of us by name. We are each precious. For the priests, it’s: see one baby and you’ve seen the lot. They saw them just as family property, not as persons. They should have listened to Elizabeth. She got it.

Julia: OK, Jesus, but what’s all this business about making Zechariah dumb? A bit brutal, surely.

Jesus: You don’t mess with angels, Julia! He was told John was central to God’s plan, he made difficulties. But when it came to naming, he trusted the angel’s words and was given good words himself. They have inspired people ever since. He thought it was worth it.
