About Today Readings

St Paulinus of Nola | Day of penance

2 Corinthians 11:18, 21-30. From all their afflictions God will deliver the just – Psalm 33(34):2-7. Matthew 6:19-23.

Where your treasure is, there will your heart be

Precious: Thanks for your lovely words, Jesus. But aren’t you a bit hard on cash reserves? Even in the Church we need money and property. Think of the churches and hospitals our predecessors built?

Jesus: Wealth isn’t the problem, Precious. It is what you want it for. If you use it to feed the poor and cure the sick, then your treasure is in heaven. But if you want it to make the Church secure, that is a problem. Your treasure lies in security here.

Precious: Thanks, Jesus. Another thing: what has that got to do with our eyes? I always thought eyes were for looking out from, not for letting light into.

Jesus: You are right, of course, Precious. Isn’t it true, though, that what we look at with the eyes of our imagination fills our heart. If it is good, it gives life, but if it is bad it makes us die inside. Haven’t you experienced that?
