About Today Readings

St Bartholomew. Day of Penance.

Apocalypse 21:9-14. Psalm 144(145):10-13, 17-18. John 1:45-51.

Your friends tell the glory of your kingship, Lord—Psalm 144(145):10-13, 17-18

‘In the spirit, he carried me to the top of a very high mountain and showed me Jerusalem.’

Today is the feast of St Bartholomew, apostle, and the readings are dedicated to the wonder and glory of the kingdom to come which will be revealed in God’s time.

In the Gospel, Philip and Nathanael speak of the man who is revealed as the Son of God. Nathanael proclaims: ‘Rabbi you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel’. Jesus responds to Nathanael’s acclamation with the hope that all believers in Christ anticipate, that ‘heaven will be laid open’ and the fullness of God will be revealed to all who seek God’s eternal banquet.
