About Today Readings

Day of penance

Isaiah 58:1-9. A broken, humbled heart, O God, you will not scorn – Psalm 50(51):3-6, 18-19. Matthew 9:14-15.

We are called to love and learn from Jesus daily

There is a lot in these two phrases. John’s disciples, typical of human nature, are comparing what they feel they need to do, with what others are doing. It is a life-long lesson learning to live the detachment of comparison. And then there is Jesus’ analogy of himself as the bridegroom regarding his relationship with his disciples. Such a special relationship, to walk with the Messiah, being loved and learning from him daily. Our Lord knew how precious this time was for them, even if at times the disciples did not, but Our Lord also knew the suffering that awaited them, and he nurtured them on earth while he could. Jesus, we feel your love, your nurturing, and we thank you, because we need you while we wait to see your face after our fasting is done.
