Hebrews 8:6-13. Kindness and truth shall meet – Psalm 84(85):8, 10-14. Mark 3:13-19.
Jesus called twelve to be with him.
Justin: I like the way you picked your Twelve Apostles – just like our selection panels. You invited all the likely lads. Then you shortlisted the right ones for the job. What were you looking for in them, Jesus?
Jesus: I wanted the people whom God would want – ordinary, not big noters, open-hearted, willing to learn from messing things up, but teachable and honest. Do you think I chose well, Justin?
Justin: Judging by those low standards, surely, Jesus. They got most things wrong, fought with one another, constantly misread you, and ran away when you needed them. And don’t let’s mention Judas! But wouldn’t you rather have had leaders with drive and with the smarts?
Jesus: In God’s eyes, Justin, the smarts mean knowing that you are a sinner and forgiven, and drive comes from the Spirit who calls us. It’s an invitation you may refuse. Would you like to join us?
