About Today Readings

St Anthony Claret

Romans 7:18-25. Teach me your laws, O Lord – Ps 118(119):66, 68, 76-77, 93-94. Luke 12:54-59.

Discerning, and doing, good

‘It’s complicated’, people will sometimes say when they’re struggling to do the right thing. There are many times in our lives when making the good and loving choice will have complicated repercussions, but there are fewer circumstances, I think, where the good and loving choice is difficult to discern.

I think that’s what Jesus is getting at in today’s reading. In our hearts, we generally know the good and loving thing to do in a particular situation. The tough part is overcoming the parts of us urging us to do otherwise – either out of malice, fear, laziness or self-doubt. Jesus urges us to overcome those inner voices, because they’re stopping us from getting closer to God.

Today, let’s pray that we might find the courage to follow the voices that lead us deeper into love, for the sake of ourselves, each other and for God.
