The Annunciation of the Lord

I am the handmaid of the Lord
In the beginning there is a young woman, given her age we might today call her a girl, ‘perplexed’ and ‘pondering’. That’s how God begins making his way, in the person of Jesus, into the world. Through a young woman, a girl, full of uncertainty. The grand prophesy of the first reading, in the Book of Isaiah, is fulfilled. God is with us. But not, maybe, as we would expect it. It’s hard to imagine a bigger surprise.
We can find ourselves, like Mary, perplexed and pondering, not sure what to make of the way God moves in our lives. God turns up when we might not expect it and seems absent when we might most desperately want to experience his presence. With Mary we might be moved to say, ‘here am I’. Here am I, desiring to be for you, with you and as you.
