Ecclesiastes 3:1-11. Blessed be the Lord, my Rock! – Ps 143(144):1-4. Luke 9:18-22.
A yearning in our hearts
There’s a line in the first reading that resonated with me: ‘He . . . has put the timeless into their hearts.’ I did some further digging, and it seems the Hebrew word appears often, in the context of ‘eternity’. It stands in contrast to the worldly events depicted earlier in the reading (seek/lose, rend/sow, born/die). It says, to me, that we don’t navigate our lives without a compass. God has given us an orientation, a yearning, a pull towards something we cannot name or know, only sense.
In the Gospel reading, Jesus is praying in solitude with his disciples. What’s going through each person’s mind as they pray and discuss worldly things together? What yearning is present in their hearts? What is it that’s not named but only sensed?
