1 Corinthians 1:17-25. The earth is full of the goodness of the Lord – Psalm 32(33):1-2, 4-5, 10-11. Matthew 25:1-13.
Five maidens took no oil for their lamps
Lucy: I feel for those poor young women who left their oil behind, Jesus. So excited to be invited to the wedding, spent ages doing their hair and chatting. Then their self-satisfied, prune-faced sisters won’t share their oil, and you call them role models. All a bit much, Jesus!
Jesus: Thanks, Lucy. Your compassion for the young women who forgot their oil does you credit. But what about the other people? Especially the young married couple who needed the lamp bearers to welcome them. Not to mention their parents and the town gossips. If there were no lamp bearers people would still be talking about it.
Lucy: Thanks, Jesus I see your point. But wasn’t the bridegroom brutal in to locking them out after they went to buy oil? Surely God’s not as mean as that.
Jesus, Well, no, Lucy, God isn’t. A story is a story. But the small decisions we make do matter, and they can damage people’s lives, can’t they.
