About Today Readings

St Stephen

Acts 6:8-10; 7:54-59. Into your hands, O Lord, I entrust my spirit – Ps 30(31):3-4, 6, 8, 16-17. Matthew 10:17-22.

Lord, do not hold this sin against them

Preaching to schoolboys, Msgr Ronald Knox once said, ‘If the saints seemed to enjoy suffering, whether it was the suffering they couldn’t avoid or the suffering they took upon themselves, it was only because they could think of no better way to prove their love of God’.

Jesus, deepen my faith in you as I set aside time each day to listen to your Spirit enlightening my mind and heart through the Scriptures, so that I, too, may have that consuming love that drove Stephen to live and work to make your love known.

When I suffer the hurts of life, help me to learn from you, as Stephen did, to ask the Father’s forgiveness for those who have caused the pain.
