St Monica. Day of Penance
1 Thessalonians 4:1-8. Let the just rejoice in the Lord – 96(97):1-2, 5-6, 10-12. Matthew 25:1-13.
What God wants is for you all to be holy
This passage of scripture touches yet again on a neuralgic point for members of the Christian churches. It seems to emphasise that holiness is a matter of sexual purity. In its context this is true. The author is addressing a troubling situation among his readers which has to do with marriage and sexual attraction. Christians today are aware that holiness is our aim in many areas of morality, not only sexual. In our own context the writer of this letter might have drawn our attention to instances of domestic violence, rape, and the human sex trade, or a lack of care for our environment. These impurities in our society mar the holiness of the Body of Christ. God’s will is that we refrain from all immorality, personal and social. How is God calling you now to make our society holy?
