St John | Day of penance
1 John 1:1-4. Let the just rejoice in the Lord – Psalm 96(97):1-2, 5-6, 11-12. John 20:2-8.
Seek joy in all things
The theme of joy runs through today’s readings. In the first reading, we hear of the joy of proclaiming the Word of Life. In a similar way, the psalm is about the joy of praising God. Today’s Gospel is about the deep joy of the Resurrection.
Joy is not mere happiness. It is possible to experience joy in the depths of grief. As Christians, we seek joy in the Risen Lord.
There is some danger of forgetting this and becoming a ‘joyless Catholic’. We can concern ourselves so much over being perfect in our observation of the faith that we forget something far more important. To be Catholic is to seek joy in all things. Rejoice!
