About Today Readings

Day of penance and fasting for peace

Romans 7:18-25. Teach me your laws, O Lord – Psalm 118(119):66, 68, 76-77, 93-94. Luke 12:54-59.

Do you not know how to interpret these times?

In many cultures when we meet others we begin with small talk about the weather. We talk sensibly about it and sometimes we do not ever get past the small talk. Thinking about the weather is important and Jesus knew that; you need to know where the wind is coming from as that will dictate what you can and cannot do. But, what about the opportunity to talk about something more important? Matters of faith, matters of the heart and mental health can get pushed to the back. Jesus needs us to interpret the times and gifts of the moment in a proactive way. The second example in this reading points to taking full responsibility for our actions and decisions. We live in a litigious society; we want to be able to take advantage of others instead of settling our differences with love and forgiveness.
