Keep your heart attentive to Christ

In the story of the ten bridesmaids, wisdom and foolishness are established as being ready or not. Some of the girls are vigilant, some are complacent. This kind of preparedness and vigilance calls for patience in waiting. And yet it seems in this era of instant gratification to be foolish to wait for anything. If you can get it now, do it now, have it now, all the better: ‘What are you waiting for?’ Plus, to wait in a state of perpetual readiness is exhausting. Somehow though, when we wait for what truly matters, we also inhabit the present more fully as the person we want to be. Patient in the hope of eternity, we keep our hearts attentive to Christ, who emerges in our every day in surprising ways and waits at the end of all our days.
