About Today Readings

The Holy Innocents.
1 John 1:5 – 2:2. Psalm 123(124):2-5, 7-8. Matthew 2:13-18.
Our soul has escaped like a bird from the hunter’s nest – Psalm 123(124):2-5, 7-8.

‘Out of Egypt I have called my son.’

Outraged that the wise men had not returned to tell him where the Messiah child could be found, Herod ordered the slaughter of all children of Bethlehem aged two and under. The angel of the Lord told Joseph in a dream to flee to Egypt to avoid Herod’s wrath. So, it is that Jesus, Mary and Joseph were refugees. Lord, on this feast day of the Holy Innocents, help me to respect life and to protect the most vulnerable in today’s world. Help me to welcome strangers, and to show love and concern for people seeking asylum in this country.
