About Today Readings

Day of penance

Exodus 20:1-17. Lord, you have the words of everlasting life – Psalm 18(19):8-11. Matthew 13:18-23.

The invitation is to all

In the Ten Commandments, God endows his people with a collection of written laws which, in their simplicity and strength, comprise an unsurpassed wisdom for us to live by. In the Parable of the Sower and the Seed, Jesus explains ‘the word of the kingdom’ to his disciples. The invitation is to all. Yet not all who hear are able to respond. As in the sowing of a crop, some seeds will fall in poor soil; too rocky, too sandy, too trodden down, or too weedy. But in some soils, the seed will take root and flourish. Our hearts are the gardens in which God’s words of everlasting life are sown. It is our choice to hear the word and understand it, and bring forth a plentiful harvest as we live by what Jesus teaches.

‘The precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart.’ (Psalm 19:8)
