About Today Readings

St Irenaeus | Day of penance

2 Kings 25:1-12. Let my tongue be silenced, if I ever forget you! – Psalm 136(137):1-6. Matthew 8:1-4.

There are no boundaries for God

The reading from Kings and the psalm today recount the sacking of Jerusalem and the exile into Babylon. How can you sing about God if you have been denied your country? This surely must ring true for us today when we honestly view the situation of the original inhabitants of this land. This is not comfortable reading or reflecting, but it is real. The Law of God was not being followed and the consequences were extreme for Jerusalem. In the Gospel, however, Jesus offers a different perspective. To heal the leper, he broke the law and touched the man risking contagion. The man was restored to his health and life by this act, but Jesus also told him to follow the Law, to show himself to the priests and to make an offering as prescribed by Moses. We have boundaries but God doesn’t.
