About Today Readings

Hosea 14:2-10. I am the Lord, your God: hear my voice – Ps 80(81):6, 8-11, 14, 17. Mark 12:28-34.

Two important laws

I can’t help feeling uncomfortable when I read psalms that talk about how the people of Israel don’t listen and it would be so much better for them if they did. Because that’s me. I forget to listen. I forget all the time. It’s not like I don’t know that prayer is good. I do know that prayer is important. I just drift somehow.

That’s why today’s Gospel is so helpful. I have a short attention span. It helps me to have everything boiled down to the essential. What’s the most important thing? Sometimes it takes more work to write something short than to write something long. It takes a great deal of brainpower to condense complex ideologies and centuries of thought into a few profound sentences. It’s no wonder that scholars marvelled at Jesus’ incredible skill in this area.

I’m an overthinker. I can’t help it. When I find myself agonising over some matter of morality, it helps so much to be able to return to these two laws.
