About Today Readings

St Thomas Becket

Day of penance

1 John 2:3–11. Let heaven and earth exult in joy! – Psalm 95(96):1–3, 5–6. Luke 2:22–35.

Lord, let us never stray from your flock

Now, Master, you may let your servant go in peace, according to your word, for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you prepared in sight of all the peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel. (Luke 2:29–32)

Today’s Gospel reading reminds us of Jesus’ words, ‘My sheep hear my voice; I know them, and they follow me’. Waiting for many years in anticipation of the Messiah, Simeon knew his shepherd. Even though Jesus was only an infant, Simeon recognised the Lord.

Dear gracious God, silence the clamouring world around us so we may hear your voice, know your face, and feel your love. Let us never stray from your flock.
