About Today Readings

Ss Martha, Mary and Lazarus

Jeremiah 26:1-9. Lord, in your great love, answer me – Psalm 68(69):5, 8-10, 14. Matthew 13:54-58.

Concentrate on what is before you and avoid judgment

‘Pay attention…’, Jeremiah passes on this message from God to people struggling to hear. In the busyness of life I know this is what I need to do more of – who is the person talking with me, how am I listening to them? Other distractions can call us away from the person in front of us, the person with us – how can I be attentive to that person at the time they need my attention. In family gatherings those who are the loudest often get the most attention, those who need it most may lose out. Our attention to the other is so critical to their wellbeing. I say it to kids in the playground, I am listening to you now, I will listen to you next . . . There is such a gift in paying attention to the other – that is what Jeremiah is on about, and Jesus too. Pay attention to what is important to the person before you, cut out the distractions and avoid judgment – this honours the other.
