Jesus remember me

It’s dawn. The sun, masked by the low clouds, is drained of colour, and the usual noises of the waking city seem muffled. A small contingent of soldiers led by a centurian quick-March 2024 towards the edge of town. They escort a tall man who walks with dignity despite his mock crown of thorns and bare feet. He is hauling a cross of lumber on his back. I know who he is: Jesus of Nazareth – the talk of Jerusalem since he arrived a week ago. I’d joined the rest of townspeople crowding into the Temple precinct, listening to him teach and talk. I watched him pass me by. He turned his head. Our eyes met. Despite it all – the sweat and dust, blood in his eyes – he looked at me and saw into my tight, sore heart. Saw my sorrow that stopped my voice with tears.

Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.
