About Today Readings

St Paul VI

1 Peter 4:7-13. The Lord comes to judge the earth – Ps 95(96):10-13. Mark 11:11-26.

Help me discern my path to you

I studied a little theology in my university days. I can remember that the style of passage of today’s Gospel is called a ‘Markan sandwich’. Mark begins by telling one story (bread), then interrupts it with a second, related story (filling), before concluding the first story (bread). It’s a way of drawing us in to reflect on both stories and the ways in which they are related. Our theology lecture was around lunch time. I remember the talk of Markan sandwiches made me so hungry.

Today, we see the story of the cursed and withered fig tree sandwiching the story of the cleansing of the temple. I am reminded that there are many worthy ministries within the Church but that I am not called to participate in all of them. It is important, also, to discern whether such ministries are still bearing fruit, or whether, like those in the temple, the people have lost their way and are focused on the wrong things.

Lord, help me to honour you in the way that I am called.
