You know I love you

As the fourth Gospel comes to a close Simon Peter is offered an opportunity to recommit to Jesus. After his three denials, he walks with his patient and forgiving Lord and friend. There’s a reminder here of the patience of Jesus, of his readiness for us to return and recommit to mission. Even after we have stepped away, having found the demands too great.

Each time Jesus speaks he begins with a question, not a demand or remonstration. The question is about what matters for Simon Peter, as it does for us, how he and we will centre our lives. Do we love Jesus? The ‘demands’, what Jesus asks of us, come later. They flow out of our commitment to love and only make sense in light of that loving relationship. Can I say, ‘Lord, you know everything; you know I love you’? What does my answer ask of me?
