About Today Readings

St Martin de Porres | Day of penance

Romans 9:1-5. Praise the Lord, Jerusalem – Psalm 147:12-15, 19-20. Luke 14:1-6.

How might our society support justice and reconciliation

When speaking with Scribes and Pharisees, Jesus often interrogates them on the relationship between the ‘law’ they seek to uphold, and the day-to-day lives of the people. He condemns those who use the law as an excuse not to lift a hand to support people who are suffering.

Today is the feast day of St Martin de Porres, who suffered discrimination as a mixed-race man under colonial Spanish occupation. It’s also a time here in Australia of a referendum considering how our own governance structures might better be oriented towards listening to, and supporting, First Nations peoples who also suffered under colonial occupation.

Might we pray to St Martin today, and remember Jesus’ example to the Pharisees, and be conscious of how our society might develop better structures to support justice and reconciliation with First Nations peoples.
