About Today Readings

St Gregory the Great. Day of Penance

Colossians 1:15-20. Come with joy into the presence of the Lord – Psalm 99(100):2-5. Luke 5:33-39.

Jesus is the source of all life

In 1975 the then Superior-General of the Jesuits, Fr Pedro Arrupe SJ was asked by a TV interviewer who Jesus was for him and, a little surprised by the question, he relied, ‘For me Jesus Christ is everything.’ The reading from Colossians confirms this intuition, for ‘all things have been created through him and for him.’ Jesus is the source of all life, and its fulfilment.

To be in the presence of the source and fulfilment of life is surely a cause for celebration. In the Gospel of Luke we are invited again to see the hospitality of God, inviting us to celebrate, to delight in his presence. Indeed, we are invited to delight in all creation, for to be alive is to be alive in the midst of Jesus’ ongoing creativity.
