About Today Readings

St Peter Chrysologus. Day of Penance

Leviticus 23:1, 4-11, 15-16, 27, 34-37. Sing with joy to God our help – Ps 80(81):3-6, 10-11. Matthew 13:54-58.

Where did he get his wisdom?

Today’s Gospel tells of Jesus’ visit to his home village of Nazareth. It was a disappointment. When he spoke in the synagogue, people questioned where his wisdom came from and his power of working miracles. They thought they knew him because they knew his relatives who were ordinary people. They took offence at his words and tried to kill him. A far cry from the hospitality offered him by Martha and her household.

Because of their lack of belief, he did not – could not – perform many miracles. Dear Lord, help us to accept you, to welcome you as did Martha. We pray for those who cannot do so.
