Philippians 1:1-11. How great are the works of the Lord! – Ps 110(111):1-6. Luke 14:1-6.
Understanding what is important
Paul’s beautiful letter to his friends in Phillippi is full of love and joy and we need to read this often in a personal way. We are included in this love. The psalm declares how glorious is God’s work, and that includes us.
Contrast the characters in the Gospel; they are not looking to praise or show love and affection; they are looking to condemn. It is the contrast between the readings today that bring us to understanding, not the similarities. Paul’s friends in Philippi are doing good works, are loving each other while defending and establishing the Gospel. The Pharisees are only looking to condemn those who do not follow their version of the Law. Jesus shows them what really is important: caring for others, healing the sick. The nit-picky details designed by humans are not God’s Law, and such an imposition deserves to be breached.
