The importance of participation

‘Night and day . . . the seed is sprouting and growing; how, he does not know.’

The parable of the seeds is a great one for those of us who like deadlines and projects. We can act like everything depends on us, and that everything will collapse if we let up our frenetic pace. However, the seeds growing on their own remind us that God is working to bring about God’s reign, and we can’t force it through our efforts.

To use another analogy, we are small players in an enormous production. Yet for those of us who relax and let others take the leading roles, Jesus also gives an important message.

Our participation in the growth of God’s reign is important and valuable. Whether we sow the seeds, water them, reap them, or see ourselves in the seeds themselves, we do have a role to play. Let us open the curtains to let the show begin.
