About Today Readings

The Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary | Day of penance

Zephaniah 3:14-18 / Romans 12:9-16. Among you is the great and Holy One of Israel – Isaiah 12:2-6. Luke 1:39-56.

God’s mercy reaches from age to age

Two mothers meet today. Mary and Elizabeth, living proof of God’s mercy. One has been found with child ‘out of wedlock’ from a backwater little place called Nazareth, and one has been considered barren. Yet they are both blessed with pregnancy and being part of God’s special plan. In this encounter, they both appear on cloud nine – rejoicing, proclaiming, blessing and being blessed. The Holy Spirit causes John to leap with joy in his mother’s womb. Yet we know that not all will be smooth sailing. No pregnancy or childbirth ever is. Being a mother involves suffering, pain and heartache too. On this Feast of the Visitation, we might rejoice at the wonderful gift of mothers, and thank God for all they endure. May all generations call them blessed.
