About Today Readings

St John Vianney | Day of penance

Leviticus 23:1, 4-11, 15-16, 27, 34-37. Sing with joy to God our help – Psalm 80(81):3-6, 10-11. Matthew 13:54-58.

A prophet is without honour in his own country

And what is wrong with a tradesmen’s son,
who grew up down the street from us,
and has some rough and dopey brothers
who speak in rustic Galilean?

Does wisdom lie in reading books,
In being born in the holy city,
In dressing well and speaking words
as polished as Herod’s palace silver?

I am the brother of everyone,
My Father gave me simple words
for needy people who can hear
God’s voice. Do you not hear him?
