Day of penance
Ecclesiasticus 47:2-11. Blessed be God my salvation! – Psalm 17(18):31, 47, 50-51. Mark 6:14-29.
The man went and beheaded him in prison.
John the Baptist had no time to prepare for death. His executioner did not want to keep the king waiting. John had to trust that his whole life had been a preparation and surrendered to that brutal ending.
Prisoners of conscience are held unjustly throughout the world. Amnesty International Urgent Action appeals alert us that someone is in danger of torture or death. Sample letters are provided. Writing such letters to authorities shows that people know and care about this person. When hundreds of letters arrive, they may lead to the release of the prisoner or at least better treatment.
Jesus, you were shocked by the murder of John and grieved for him. Help those who face summary execution in Iran, China, Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Afghanistan. Comfort the families who grieve. Impel me to do what I can for people in grave danger.
