Healthy theological discussion engages with the mystery of God
In today’s Gospel reading, Jesus engages in theological debate to the delight of the crowd.
There’s much delight to be had in theological discussion, and there are many platforms these days on which to participate in such discussions, including social media. But sometimes the discussion doesn’t leave us feeling all that joyful and nourished, but instead leaves us feeling angry or empty.
Healthy theological discussion engages with the mystery of God, while also helping point us to the goodness, beauty and truth of the Gospel message. Such discussions can leave us feeling better than when we began it. When theological discussion has a different effect, we might consider whether we’re participating for our own ends rather than God’s.
