Job 38:1, 12-21; 40:3-5. Guide me, Lord, along the everlasting way – Psalm 138(139):1-3, 7-10, 13-14. Luke 10:13-16.
Walk humbly in the universe
Today’s Psalm, ‘Guide me, Lord, along the everlasting way’, is an apt one as we come to the end of the Season of Creation in the Catholic Church.
In the first reading, God questions Job about his knowledge of Creation, highlighting Job’s folly in questioning God’s authority. It’s a helpful reminder of our own folly in seeking to control and have mastery over the elements, and in ignoring or dismissing the harm we might do to the environment. No one other than God can ‘comprehend the breadth of the earth’.
Instead, we must seek to be guided by God along the ‘everlasting way’; to walk humbly in the universe, and listen to what our tradition teaches us about stewardship and following God.
