Isaiah 29:17-24. The Lord is my light and my salvation – Ps 26(27):1, 4, 13-14. Matthew 9:27-31.
A new way of seeing
Today’s readings promise that for those who are willing, the coming of Jesus is an opportunity to see the world in a whole new way. In the reading from Isaiah, the prophet promises that a day will come when the deaf shall hear the words of a book, and the blind will see out of the gloom and darkness. Today’s Gospel, then, is a fulfilment of that promise in the Jewish scriptures.
At the heart of these stories of healing is belief that God has the power to change the world if we pray for it. But it can be hard to have that belief sometimes. When I hear about stories of miraculous healing, I remember family and friends I’ve prayed for who succumbed to illness. But I guess that’s the other part of Jesus’ promise – we might suffer in this world, but the welcoming and loving arms of God await us in the next.
