About Today Readings

St Anthony Zaccaria | Day of penance

Amos 8:4-6, 9-12. No one lives on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God – Psalm 118(119):2, 10, 20, 30, 40, 131. Matthew 9:9-13.

He eats with sinners

Severus: No, Jesus, the HR department does not approve. It’s bad enough for you to be working with sinners, but you should never put them on your staff. And dining with these mafiosi tax collectors and their blowsy women is an absolute no-no. What on earth were you doing?

Jesus: Actually, Severus, Matthew was a person in whom I saw goodness and a thirst for God. And besides, I am called to reach out to people who are despised and rejected and to invite them to God’s banquet. I see all people as human, Severus. How do you see them?

Severus: As you should see them, Jesus: as good and bad, safe and dangerous, deserving and undeserving. It’s your job to tell the difference and treat them accordingly.

Jesus: So would you pass by beggars in the street without greeting them, Severus?

Severus: Of course, Jesus. Your followers do that, don’t they?
