The Way, the Truth and the Life

The Good News is a man dead on a tree. Such is the near paradox of what Paul proclaims in his preaching at Antioch. Except it is not quite paradox, for ‘God raised him from the dead’. Death is not the full story; the Cross in history and in symbol is the way to the Resurrection. Jesus is, as we read in the Gospel today, ‘the Way, the Truth and the Life’.

Jesus makes the declaration amid the confusion among his disciples. This house where Jesus is to make a place for his friends is only accessible through that friendship. Jesus tells the disciples they know the way because they know him. The destination is a fuller, complete relationship with him. Jesus accompanies us still, a friend modelling human excellence by humble, self-sacrificing love.
