Saints Paul Miki and his Companions
Ecclesiasticus 47:2-13. Blessed be God my salvation! – Ps 17(18):31, 47, 50-51. Mark 6:14-29.
John’s disciples came to bury him
Dulcie: What a terrible story, Jesus. It’s just a story of the victory of sin over goodness: of Herodias’ cruelty, her daughter organising murder, Herod’s infatuation and fear of embarrassing, and John’s terrible death and the parading of his head. It’s enough to make you despair in humanity.
Jesus: Yes, Dulcie, it is a story of human sin and frailty, isn’t it? But did evil really triumph over good? Isn’t John’s faithfulness stronger than Herod’s weakness? And didn’t John’s disciples have the last word by burying him so tenderly? And remember, John encouraged me in my ministry. Do you really think that a good person’s killing is the end?
Dulcie: Yes, Jesus, I do. It’s sentimental to look on the bright side. Death is death, and that’s all there is to say.
Jesus: Even if someone rises from the dead, Dulcie?
