About Today Readings

Day of penance

Genesis 37:3-4, 12-13, 17-28. Remember the marvels the Lord has done – Ps 104(105):16-21. Matthew 21:33-43, 45-46.

Importance of people

The first theme that comes to mind as I reflect on today’s readings is ‘betrayal’. The actions of Joseph’s brothers in the first reading, and the tenants in the Gospel, make us angry, as they should.

In reflecting further, I’m struck at Jesus’ response, which at first seems out of place: ‘The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone’, he says. At one level he’s talking about himself, and the Pharisees as those who rejected him. But I also think about those the master sent back who were killed – the messengers whose lives were seen as worthless, the son who was seen as a means to an end. For Jesus, I think, what happens to the property is far less important than the rejection of those people and who they represent. That’s the true betrayal.
