Mystery of our God
What a tantalising role Christians are called to play, as St Paul has it, as ‘stewards entrusted with the mysteries of God’. It is not that we know and understand all that is to be known and understood. For that is not how mystery works. But maybe that we suggest something of the mystery of God’s presence by our lives. In our living we gently hold something of the rumour of God that springs from our experience of creation.
This is an old rumour, as old as time. In Jesus Christ it is made totally new. Suddenly the rumour of God is the suggestion of something, someone immanent. Someone with whom we can be in relationship. As Jesus’ suggests in Luke’s Gospel today, we must put aside old assumptions and dead-end ways to live the relationship with Jesus through which we are drawn deeper into the mystery of our God.
