About Today Readings

St Sixtus II & Cc; St Cajetan

Nahum 2:1, 3; 3:1-3, 6-7. It is I who deal death and give life – Deuteronomy 32:35-36, 39, 41. Matthew 16:24-28.

Take up your cross and follow me

Timida: Jesus, I would love to follow you. But I’m scared of carrying a cross behind you. I like travelling incognito and being a small target. Won’t everyone be staring at me if I am carrying a cross? And being nailed to it is serious stuff.

Jesus: The thing about crosses, Timida, is that they’re not a fashion accessary you decide to wear on Sundays. Crosses arrive in the wrong place at the wrong time, and you get nailed to them. The last thing you’ll worry about is being noticed.

Timida: But I’m good about avoiding wrong times and places, Jesus. I’m one of nature’s escapers.

Jesus: You don’t need to go out and look for crosses. They’ll find you when you follow me. And I’ll be with you too, Timida.

Timida: That’s just what I’m scared of. You are dangerous to be with, Jesus.
