It’s unclear who penned the Epistle to the Hebrews, and it’s one of those mysteries that has been with the Church from the start. Origen thinks the author was either Clement, who later became Bishop of Rome, or Luke, the author of a Gospel and Acts.
Other contenders have been Priscilla, St Paul’s co-worker and fellow church planter. But does it matter who wrote it? Perhaps not, but there is something intriguing in the way the author chose to remain anonymous. Unlike other epistles, Hebrews omits not only the writer’s name but also the city to which it was addressed. But whoever the author was, their letter suggests an intimate knowledge of an established community of Jewish Christians that had endured great hardship. And instead of commiserating or addressing whatever grievances they might have, the letter closes with a surprising call to action: a reminder of the moral standards expected within the Christian community and a call to extend grace to those who suffer even more they do.
