Transformative power of a sacrificial love

On that Friday afternoon, the false piety of Jesus’ enemies came to a nasty conclusion. Religious leaders held the Sabbath in high regard. Demonstrating a warped view of righteousness, they believed it was no problem executing people – let alone an innocent man – on a cross, but it was a terribly unholy thing to let those dead and dying bodies hang there on the Sabbath. Their response to this perceived dilemma was not compassion or merciful coup de grâce, but a final cruelty: to break the legs of the condemned and hasten the agonising asphyxiation. At this point, Jesus was already dead. To be sure, a soldier thrust a spear – likely a standard eight-foot Roman hasta with a long, flat iron head – up into Jesus’ left side, under the ribs, into his heart. Somehow, this was still part of God’s plan. May we contemplate the transformative power of a sacrificial love so immense that it absorbed the full indignity of human malice.
