Sing to the Lord a new song

The psalmist puts song and music into our love of God in these verses. Our joy is to know that God loves us and we are saved. We have every reason to be exultant, to sing and shout and dance, to be jubilant (what a lovely word), to jump for joy in this knowledge. Let us bless then the sacred music that lifts us to a state of awe and wonder in praise of God. We all have our musical preference. Some may love Bach or various versions of Ave Maria and Amazing Grace. Some may love the anthemic plea of Jerusalem or the Hallelujah Chorus. Some may enjoy the musicals and the crossover hits, such as Day by Day from Godspell. Some may love the mellow blues of gospel. Others may be moved to tears by a lone lament. Some may sing exultantly with swirling high notes, others doofing with the bass line. There is nothing to beat the full swell of choir or symphony in the praise of God and his glory. It is spine- and soul-tingling.
