About Today Readings

Day of penance

1 John 5:5-13. Lord, every nation on earth will adore you – Psalm 147:12-15, 19-20. Luke 5:12-16.

If you want to, you can cure me

In the Gospel story from Luke the man with leprosy offers Jesus the choice to heal him – ‘if you want to’! Jesus of course wants to and touches him, breaking the rules around social behaviour with outcasts. Can we be like that? Can we choose to help others in this very strange COVID-19 experience? We are in awe and give thanks for medical personnel who have been so generous with their time and expertise particularly those who have contracted the virus during their time of duty. This is Jesus in action today as described in the first letter of John: Jesus is present in the water, the blood and the Spirit. Those who have worked unceasingly to bring others to health bring this action of Christ into the world in a very real way.
