Acts 15:22-31. I will praise you among the nations, O Lord – Ps 56(57):8-12. John 15:12-17.
Message of love
Jesus’ command of love changes everything. We can miss how much that is so. Two thousand years of the Christian message in culture can make it hard to recognise just how distinctive this call to love is. As the historian Tom Holland points out, The Beatles sing ‘All you need is love’ because they were formed in a Christian culture. This is not to suggest love cannot be found in all sorts of places. Nor that all Christians are loving. Not at all.
But maybe today we can hear the message of love afresh. Maybe we can recognise its challenge, that it shakes our complacency and makes demands. As CS Lewis wrote, ‘To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything and your heart will be wrong and possibly broken’. How are you called to love today?
