Day of penance
Philippians 3:17 – 4:1. Let us go rejoicing to the house of the Lord – Psalm 121(122):1-5. Luke 16:1-8.
Children of light
‘The children of this age are shrewder than the children of light.’ These are Jesus’ words. And we know this so well in our own digital age. Shrewd scammers deceive unsuspecting people every year. It seems that scamming was alive and well in Jesus’ story of that crafty property manager. Paul has nasty words for such people in his letter to the Philippians. ‘They live as enemies of the cross of Christ. Their god is the belly; and their minds are set on earthly things.’ The Philippians were the first people in Europe to receive the Gospel from Paul. And Acts tells us that it was to Lydia and her friends there that Paul first preached. They became friends of the cross of Christ, and Paul loved them very much. The crafty steward story invites us to use money to win friends, but especially friendship with God, and we will be children of light.
