About Today Readings

Birthday of The Blessed Virgin Mary. Day of Penance.

Romans 8:28-30. Psalm 12(13):6-7. Matthew 1:1-16, 18-23.

With delight I rejoice in the Lord — Psalm 12(13):6-7.

‘I will sing to you, O Lord, because you have been good to me.’

Mary, in her day, echoes the psalmist, for she would have had much to thank God for. We too have much to be thankful for, in that Mary gave birth to Jesus, our example of how to live a true Christian life.

If we strive to follow Jesus’ example in our daily lives, we can never fail.

Mary too is a role model for all of us. She was a simple, courageous and humble young woman who put her complete trust in God. She answered ‘yes’ to all that God asked of her, no matter how difficult the task might have been.

We too can be open to God’s call, knowing and believing that our journey may not always be easy, but will be rewarding.

As we celebrate the birthday of Mary, let us pray for the strength, courage and determination that she showed in the face of adversity.
