About Today Readings

1 John 5:5-13. Praise the Lord, Jerusalem – Ps 147:12-15, 19-20. Luke 5:12-16.

Space and time nourish our growth

In the letters of John there is often appreciation of light opposed to darkness, truth to falsehood, love to hate. In today’s reading from 1 John 5, the world and belief are seen as opposites. For John the world is darkness, falsehood and non-belief. But Luke, in the Gospel passage, has a warmer, more realistic appreciation of the world, even if that world is scarred by leprosy. Our belief in Jesus Son of God is a belief that grows slowly as we ourselves grow slowly in the world that surrounds, nourishes, and so often protects us. We journey in space and time, and both space and time nourish our growth as human beings. Jesus himself sought time out in desolate spaces. We all need time out from the noise and chaos, the darkness of life, and the world provides many a desolate place in which to be healed.
