About Today Readings

St Alphonsus Mary de’Liguori

Jeremiah 28:1-17. Teach me your laws, O Lord – Psalm 118(119):29, 43, 79-80, 95, 102. Matthew 14:13-21

Committed to the mission of God

Saint Alphonsus founded a congregation, the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (Redemptorists), whose goal was to teach and preach in the slums of cities and other poor places. In the Gospel today we hear that before his ministry, Jesus goes up on a mountainside by himself to pray. Saint Alphonsus was a writer and composer, and so it was probable that he too went off to a lonely place to pray. It is in moments of quiet and prayer, where God will teach us, will guide us, will give us comfort and strength. Jesus was committed to the mission of God. The ways of Jesus are sometimes hard to follow and so we ask in wholeness ‘Teach me your laws, O Lord’.
