About Today Readings

Amos 2:6-10, 13-16. Remember this, you who never think of God – Psalm 49(50):16-23. Matthew 8:18-22.

I will show my salvation to the upright

The first reading and the psalm today depict a harsh God; one that is angry at his people. But this is not a capricious God that wants riches and blind obedience for himself; rather, one that is angry on behalf of the poor and marginalised. He condemns the people for ‘trampling on the heads of ordinary people and pushing the poor out of their path’, and itemises the sins of greed, profanity, licentiousness and covetousness. When the Lord speaks he makes it clear the lawbreakers will not get away with their crimes. The psalm doubles down on those hypocrites who recite the commandments but do not practise them. Our prayer today is that we act righteously by being upright in our dealings with others and remember to praise God for his blessings.
